HIV / AIDS

What is Aids ?

AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) is a disease caused by a virus called HIV (human immunodeficiency virus). HIV attacks the body's immune system. A healthy immune system is what keeps you from getting sick.

When people have AIDS, their bodies can't fight disease. They get sick easily and have trouble getting well. They usually die of an infection or cancer.

A person can be infected with HIV/ Aids in the following ways:

  • Sexual activities with infected person.
  • HIV can be spread from mother to child.
  • Blood transmitted from infected person to uninfected person.
  • Injecting drugs are also associated HIV infection.
  • Uses of contaminated blood products are also vulnerable to HIV infection.

A person cannot be infected with HIV/ Aids in the following ways:-

  • Animals’ bites or insect bites.
  • Eating food prepared by infected person.
  • Sharing items such as towels, cutlery or crockery.
  • Hugging, touching and shaking hands.
  • Toilet seats.

Sings And Symptoms of Aids

  • Fever
  • Tiredness
  • Headache
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Sore throat
  • Lack of energy
  • Weight loss
  • Frequent fevers and sweats
  • Persistent skin rashes or flaky skin
  • Short-term memory loss

Treatment of Aids

Combination of several drugs called highly active antiretroviral therapy is used to treat people with HIV. This treatment is not a cure. The virus still persists in various body sites, such as in the lymph glands.

HIV antiretroviral treatment may stop people from becoming ill for many years. Antiretroviral treatment for HIV infection consists of drugs which work against HIV infection.

Prevention Tips of Aids

  • Infected person should avoid sexual activities.
  • Always use latex condoms during sexual contact.
  • You should avoid depression and anxiety.
