Blackheads

Blackheads - Blackheads Removal, Treatment, Cause and Cure of Blackhead

What is Blackheads ?

Blackheads, also called comedones, are small, flesh colored, white, or dark bumps that give skin a rough texture. The bumps are found at the opening of a sebaceous follicle (pore). Comedones are the skin-coloured, small bumps (papules) frequently found on the forehead and chin of those with acne. Open comedones are blackheads; black because of surface pigment (melanin) rather than dirt. Closed comedones are whiteheads; the follicle is completely blocked. Larger and deeper uninflamed bumps are called nodules. They are more common on the trunk than on the face. The cells lining the sebaceous duct proliferate excessively in acne (cornification) and may block the sebaceous duct forming a comedone.

Causes of Blackheads

  • Poor cleansing routine.
  • Oily skin.
  • Blockage of pores.
  • Hardened sebaceous secretion.

Effective Tips to get rid of Blackheads

  • Avoid washing the face with soap for twice a day.
  • Wash your face with plain water at least 5-6 times a day.
  • Use creams containing AHAs (Alpha Hydroxy Fruit acids) like glyco-creams that will clear away any dead skin cells and "expose" the blackhead.
  • Use the AHA's every 3 days or so.
  • Keep your hair away from your face. Greasy hair and skin go together, and hair can spread infection.
  • Sunshine or ultra-violet light encourages skin peeling, and so helps to clear blocked pores. So sunbathing or use of sun-beds in moderation can be helpful.

Comparison between Blackheads and Whiteheads

The main difference between the blackheads and whiteheads is the area which is affected. Whole blackheads can be anywhere but white heads are caused where the skin is fine and delicate. They are common under eyes, on the nose, cheekbone etc.
