Crohns Disease - Symptoms, Causes, Treatment and Home Remedies

What is Crohns Disease?

Crohn's disease, an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), causes ulcers to form in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract anywhere from the mouth to the anus. Symptoms include stomach cramps and pain that comes and goes, diarrhea, and blood in your stool. Other symptoms include losing weight, feeling sick to your stomach, having joint pain and feeling tired. Some people who have Crohn's disease have severe symptoms, while others have less severe symptoms. Some people who have the disease have long periods without symptoms, even without getting treatment. Others with more severe disease will need long-term treatment or even surgery.

Causes of Crohns Disease

  • The exect cause of Crohn's disease is unknown.

Diagnosis of Crohns Disease

Blood tests - Your doctor may suggest blood tests to check for anemia or signs of infection.
Colonoscopy - This is the most sensitive test for diagnosing Crohn's disease. It allows your doctor to view your entire colon using a thin, flexible, lighted tube with an attached camera.
Small bowel X-ray - This can be very helpful for locating areas of narrowing or inflammation in the small bowel that are seen in Crohn's disease or when you doctor is having difficulty determining which type of inflammatory bowel disease you have.
Computerized tomography (CT) - Sometimes you may have a CT scan, a special X-ray technique that provides more detail than a standard X-ray does. This test looks at the entire bowel as well as at tissues outside the bowel that can't be seen with other tests.

Treatment of Crohns disease

Anti-inflammatory drugs ( mesalamine ) reduce the inflammation. These drugs are used to prevent flares in people with mild Crohn disease.
Antibiotics may be prescribed for abscesses or fistulas.
Cortisone drugs and steroids - called corticosteriods - provide very effective results. Prednisone is a common generic name of one of the drugs in this group of medications.
Mild symptoms may respond to an antidiarrheal medication such as loperamide (Imodium A-D, for example), which slows or stops the painful spasms in your intestines that cause symptoms.
Surgery is often used to manage complications of Crohn's disease, including fistulae, small bowel obstruction, colon cancer, small intestine cancer and fibrostenotic strictures, when strictureplasty is sometimes performed.
