Telogen Effluvium

Telogen Effluvium - Causes, Symptoms & Treatment

Telogen Effluvium Information

An excessive loss of hair in which normal cycle of the hair is altered is known as telogen effluvium. Hair growth depends on three phases which are a regression phase, a growth phase and a resting phase. Mostly the hairs belong to the growth phase and about 100 hairs fall from the scalp every day. When this condition occurs, the hairs enter the resting phase of the cycle and falling of hairs becomes greater as compared to normal. In this condition one can lose over 300 hairs per day.

Causes of Telogen Effluvium

  • During pregnancy, more hair follicles are maintained in the growth phase. After pregnancy, a greater proportion of these hairs go into the resting phase, causing a temporary self-correcting increased shedding of the hair.
  • The same phenomenon can be seen after stopping birth control pills.
  • The flu or stress can also cause telogen effluvium.

Symptoms of Telogen Effluvium

The symptoms of telogen effluvium is increased hair shedding. Patients usually only complain that their hair is falling out at an increased rate.

Treatment of Telogen Effluvium

There is no treatment for telogen effluvium. The problem will correct itself. All the lost hair will eventually be replaced.

  • You should Ensure a nutritious diet, with plenty of protein, fruit and vegetables.
  • These shed or loose hairs all have club-shaped "roots" typical of resting, telogen hairs and may be easily identified under the microscope.
  • Gentle handling of the hair, avoiding over-vigorous combing, brushing and any type scalp message are important.
